Hurricane Season Continues

In the Bahamas, at this time we are experiencing a hurricane. 

  Although this is a category one hurricane our people are still fearful after Dorian's visit last year. People on Grand Bahama and Abaco in particular know the impact of that hurricane.

  Hurricane season is from June 01 to November 30.  Although this is a known fact, most if not all Bahamians 'pray' that a hurricane does not 'hit' the Bahamas.

  This year, 2020 the prayers are more earnest due to the Pandemic of COVID 19. The same island that was affected by hurricane Dorian last year now has the largest number of positive cases. Why is this? Is there a definitive answer? Is it due to citizens' carelessness? Are we taking the issue too lightly? Are we believing that it's just a type of 'flu'? I don't have an answer but I too would like to know why this is happening.

  These above issues affect every aspect of our lives, church, family time, school, travel domestic and international, grocery shopping, dining out for celebrations, you think of it and it's affected in some way.

  So, we don't have the pleasure of enjoying a normal life like we used to. What would the 'new normal', for it is been crafted even as we make adjustments for what we are now experiencing, look like? Would we ever go with a mask? Would we have those large gatherings at 'Homecoming Festivals', sporting events, Junkanoo, carnival? Would the vaccine, when it is created, be inexpensive enough to be administered to every citizen at a nominal fee? These questions are not easily answered because we are dealing with such a new coronavirus. 

  What if the vaccine is not free to every citizen? What then?

The Pandemic, and a possible Impeding storm ..Emancipation Day 2020

It's three days before one of the biggest holidays in the Bahamas; Emancipation Day
It would not be so this year, 2020.
COVID 19 has canceled everything... On this beautiful island of freedom, Eleuthera there are usually at least three 'Home Coming Festivals' one in the south, one in central and one in north Eleuthera.
These festivals bring in revenue to the island businesses and the airlines in particular.
This year though all that has changed.
Almost every country around the world is somehow locked down with the COVID 19 pandemic.
Today, a storm is heading towards the Bahamas. With the aftermath of Dorian and the effects of the Pandemic on our doorsteps, there is much for Bahamians to be in a panic mode.
The rise in positive cases within the country has more people frightened as we have no clear information as to why the virus is spreading.
Bahamians must take heed to what is going on around us and prepare for no matter what.
This should include, batteries and searchlights, bottled water, canned foods, candles and matches, and other foodstuffs that could last for at least a week.
This is the time to talk to the younger children to make them aware of what may happen if the storm affects the Bahamas.

Who wants to make money online using your phone, laptop via the Internet

I was asked this question a few weeks ago, Would you like to make money using the Internet? I was skeptical at first, but the proof was shoved in my face by several people. I said I can do that, much can happen in a few weeks.
So, when the opportunity for the class with Junior Anthony presented itself, I jumped in, without invitation. I was timid about doing it but it changed my whole look out on improving my financial status.
After that 2-day intense class, followed by a Monday evening of discussion what next. I became more determined to learn how to.
You know that saying that when the student is ready the teacher would appear, well, I was ready and the teacher did appear.
No spoon-feeding was allowed. You watched and listened to the steps and followed the directions. And, if you were confused, a family member would offer help. This is a family that wants every member to be successful.

2020 What a Year!

It's Saturday the 25 July 2020. What a year it's been!
No matter what there is still so much to be thankful for.
If you are reading this, you are alive.
As we look at the number of people who died from COVID 19 Coronavirus worldwide over six hundred and eleven thousand we are still here. For that, we must be thankful.
In this, my country, The Commonwealth of the Bahamas we have eleven [11] who have died. We are thankful and prayerful that the number stays small.
Our neighbor, The USA. just fifty miles away, where we have so many family members, has had a staggering one hundred and thirty-nine, eight hundred and sixteen deaths, to put that in perspective about a third of the population of the Bahamas.
Today, we are on lockdown. Some of us may be angry but the life we save maybe our own.
We must look out for one another.

What can we do to make it better for all of us?

Today is Sunday, June 3, 2019.

So much is happening in my country at this time, some positive and some not.

High school Family Island graduates this year can benefit from a free University education and the University of the Bahamas. They need only pass their BGCSEs and maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Wow! That is doable if students put his/her mind to it.

We have a new Governor-General, the country's eleventh, in the person of His Excellency C.A. Smith who started out as an educator. He was inducted on Friday 28 June 2018.

Disney is coming to Eleuthera [Southern District], that's a good thing. The question, are the people of South Eleuthera ready? If not, what are they doing to get ready? How many have considered taking the carpentry course at CTI, the electrical courses? I would like to remind the people that 'luck' is when opportunity meets preparedness... so, we must get prepared.

There have been several school fires. As they have occurred on different family islands the question to be asked is did upgrading and maintenance play a part? Would this make it more difficult for schools on other family islands to be repaid and upgrades this summer? What would August 26, 2019, look like when teachers report for duty for the new school year? After all, we are one Bahamas and when one suffers we all suffer.

And the electrical outages, yes worse in New Providence, but the other islands have some outages too.
Can we as a people be tolerant enough to endure this 'hot' summer that can run until October? I am only raising the questions. The answers will come from all of us as a people.

No blaming, it's time to think this all through. 'One people united in love and service', service being the operating word. Can we serve? Do we have the will to volunteer to make it better for ourselves and others? I think we do, I hope we do.

Schools have been out for two weeks, what are the children doing? Are the camps for learning a skill? babysitting the children? What is it that we as a people see as the end result of these camps. Are they accessible for all 'those who are well off and those who are financially deprived?

There are so many things that must be thought through. I say again we can do it.

This is a challenge to you who take the time to read this, ask yourself the question 'What can I do to make it better? How can I be of service?

South Eleuthera's Central Secondary School - The school of Choice needs your help.

It been more that a year since I've written. Wow!

To date I have been back at Preston Albury Central Secondary school for three years. So much has changed in those years.

Mr. Frank Jones the principal when I returned has retired, so has Mrs. Jones his wife and Mrs. Sybilene Taylor. Teachers have transferred to other islands of the Bahamas, some moved because they got married, but the school is still here making its mark on the community of South Eleuthera.

The school has made some strides including having the Jr. Ministry of Tourism for the District of Eleuthera one year and the assistant Jr. Minister of Tourism for the District the other culminating with the Jr. Minister of Tourism the following year.  In the Hospitality area students have received partial scholarships to Lincoln Tech, and the College of The Bahamas. These achieved with the school's physical plant not being anywhere near where it should be.

In Junior Junkanoo and Sports the school continues to dominate.

Now, it's 2015 and the school has a new principal in the person of Mr. Jason Thompson a direct descendant from Bannerman Town, the furthest community in the south of Eleuthera.

He seems proud to be a product of the soil and so far pledged to increase the prominence of the school. We welcome that.

Projections include but are not limited to- community based meetings with parents;having teachers walk through the communities where the students come from; engaging parents so that they are attached to the various departments of the schools. This to help with and ensure that their children and the teachers have a more comfortable surroundings.

The first project sited is the teacher's staff room, at this time, it is so hot that teachers have taken to sitting under the trees to remain cool as they prepare for their classes. Some have even had to take their class under those trees.

Students have been encouraged to keep the school's ground clean. Recycling bins are placed at various sites to ensure that materials like plastic, paper and styrofoam containers and placed in their own space.

Despite all of this the school is still lacking a Carpentry and Joinery teacher and a business teacher. We are hopeful that in short order that would no longer be so.
